Our students Valezka Yrigoyen, Lucas Ramírez, and Cristian Ramos, from the Political Science and Government program of the Faculty of Social Sciences, had an outstanding participation in the 28th World Congress of Political Science organized by the International Political Science Association (IPSA), held from July 12 to 16, 2025, in Seoul, South Korea. Our representatives contributed internationally relevant analyses in sessions dedicated to autocratization, electoral competition, and the role of women in Asian politics.
Valezka Yrigoyen presented the paper “Democratic Backsliding and Autocratization in Polarized Societies: Power Concentration and Power Dilution in India and Peru”, a comparative study exploring different processes of democratic backsliding in India and Peru, and their effects in shaping varying levels of governance in each case.
Meanwhile, Lucas Ramírez and Cristian Ramos presented the paper “An Illusory Fall: The Reawakening of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) After its Defeat in Japan’s 2009 Parliamentary Elections”, analyzing the factors that enabled the surprising recovery of Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party after its 2009 defeat, offering comparative perspectives that enrich the study of party competition and political resilience dynamics.
Organized in collaboration with the Korean Political Science Association and the broader Asian social sciences community, the 2025 World Congress highlighted IPSA’s mission to foster inclusive and global academic participation. Delegates from 95 countries presented 3,053 papers across 776 panels.
